Grief is a hard emotion and people deal with it many different ways. I recently lost an uncle to Alzheimer's. It was a long and hard road for both him and his family. In a way, this has brought peace to a horrific situation, but there is still an intense sadness in losing one you have loved.
Bach Flower Remedy for Grief
Personally, I have turned to Bach Flower Essences for many situations. I have used their Rescue Remedy for stressful situations and to help me ease tension. However, for grief I turn to their single remedy, Star of Bethlehem.
There's no such thing as "normal" grief. According to researchers, there's what's known as the dual process model, which says that in order to be healthy, you need to oscillate between dealing with the loss, and dealing with daily life. You need both. And among the Bach flower remedies for grief and loss, the uses of the Star of Bethlehem Bach flower remedy sit on the comfort side of the pendulum, designed to help you rather than accelerate your grieving.
The 1999 paper that first described the dual process model splits coping into loss-oriented coping, which is directly confronting the loss (crying, remembering, longing) and restoration-oriented coping, which is dealing with other things that have come about because of the loss (new routines, new roles, having an afternoon off from grief). They say it’s healthy for the griever to oscillate between the two; it’s considered normal.
Applications of Bach Flower Essences
It is recommended for shock, grief, distress, for those who need consolation and comfort, for bad news, an accident, fright, a narrow escape, for delayed shock, to neutralize effects of any shock past or present, even the shock of birth.
Flower Essences for Grief
Bach flowers for grief offer a simple and natural approach that works with the emotional state of a person, rather than the physical illness. They act to harmonize and balance the personality, and to counteract such things as irritation, fears and guilt, which Dr. Bach, the founder, saw as the real cause of illness and unhappiness.
I would like to clarify, however, that the Star of Bethlehem Bach flower essence is not a replacement for the comfort of loved ones, or therapy if needed. What it is, is a safe Bach flower essence for grief, and the Star of Bethlehem Bach flower benefits may help support you as you cope with your emotions.
What does the research say? Well, the research is pretty new. We have two clinical trials from 2025 and 2026, which are a 2026 triple blind randomised controlled trial for hope and quality of life in people with advanced cancer, and a 2025 clinical trial on dental anxiety in children. But neither of those trials focused on grief. So, that's why we think of Star of Bethlehem as one little part of a larger support system rather than a treatment on its own.
Taking Star of Bethlehem Day to Day
So how do you actually take it? Star of Bethlehem comes as liquid drops. You can take them straight from the dropper or add them to a glass of water and sip through the day. The number of drops varies by product, so follow the directions on your bottle's label. A few practical notes: - Keep the bottle close in the first days after a loss, when shock and sorrow can hit without warning. - Of all the Bach flower remedies, Star of Bethlehem is one of the five flowers in Rescue Remedy. If you already use Rescue Remedy for stressful moments, you've met it before. - You can return to it whenever a fresh wave of sadness comes. Anniversaries, holidays, and a song on the radio all count.
Safety and Side Effects to Know
Star of Bethlehem Bach flower side effects aren't commonly reported, and the remedy is generally considered gentle. What to watch out for is the base. Many flower essence bottles use alcohol as a preservative, so if you can’t have alcohol, are pregnant or planning to give it to a child, make sure you read the bottle. If your grief feels like it isn’t lifting, or if it’s making life so difficult that you’re struggling to function, it’s time to get professional help. Please contact your doctor or a grief counsellor. At Village Green Apothecary, our practitioners are happy to talk through how a flower essence might fit into your routine, tailored to your needs.
